Discover Primary Science is a project run by the Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) awareness programme in Ireland. The programme aims to develop creativity in our children, show them how important science is to our everyday lives and more importantly how much fun it can be!

The Discover Primary Science programme is intended to be an invaluable resource for teachers and students alike by helping large numbers of young children to understand that science isn’t just about people in white coats carrying out difficult experiments. It’s about fun, discovery and adventure, and it is something which is fundamentally relevant to our everyday lives.

You can find some great science ideas and activities on their website. Go check it out: http://www.primaryscience.ie

You are probably already aware of the problems with Sparklebox following the imprisonment of its creator

Here are three websites that are filling the gap left by Sparklebox – all of them provide free printable worksheets and display materials that teachers might find useful.

Twinkl : This is a brand new online resource centre created just for teachers. Resources for Literacy and Numeracy are already online, I’m hoping they’ll start to cover Science and other subjects to follow soon.

Primary School Teaching : Primary School Teaching is a platform for sharing and ranking teaching resources and ideas. Lots of subjects covered and a useful search facility.

Teachers Pet : Another new website with a growing bank of PDF resources to download. It was only launched this week – so give it time to grow. IWB resources are on their way apparently.

Science by Email looks like it could be a handy resource to keep an eye on:

“In recent years, Science by Email has produced a diverse range of science activities for subscribers to try at home or in the classroom. You can access them via this archive.”

You can also subscribe and have science ideas emailed direct to your inbox. The list is aimed at teachers in Australia, but anyone can join the mailing list.

Another service worth joining is Ictopus, which provides a weekly email of useful lesson ideas for Primary Teachers, for all subjects. It’s free to register, and you get access to the entire archive of past resources.
